When storms roll across the plateau and the power blinks, garage door openers take it worse than most appliances - they live on the ceiling, plugged into the most surge-prone circuit in the house, with a logic board that remembers everything the hard way. Run these checks in order before assuming the worst.

1. The GFCI outlet tripped

Garage receptacles are almost always on a ground-fault circuit, and an outage flicker trips them constantly. Find the outlet with the little TEST/RESET buttons - it may be in the garage, or the whole circuit may reset from a bathroom or exterior outlet - and press RESET. If the opener’s light comes back on, you’re done. This one check resolves more post-storm opener calls than everything else combined.

2. The opener is in lockout

Some openers come back from a power cut in a locked or confused state. The reset ritual worth trying: unplug the opener, count to thirty, plug it back in, and run one full cycle from the wall button (not the remote). The wall button is wired; it tells you whether the opener itself works before you chase remotes.

3. The remotes lost their minds

Surges can wipe the opener’s remote pairing. If the wall button works but remotes and keypad don’t, re-pair them: press the Learn button on the back or side of the motor unit, then press the remote button within 30 seconds. Same procedure for the keypad. Car buttons (HomeLink) re-pair from the car’s side afterward. Takes five minutes, costs nothing.

4. The door is disconnected

If someone used the red release cord to get a car out during the outage - smart move - the opener now runs while the door ignores it. Pull the release cord toward the door to re-arm the trolley, then run a full cycle; it reconnects itself with a satisfying clunk.

When it’s a real repair

If the opener is silent with power confirmed, hums without moving, or the lights blink an error pattern, the surge likely got the logic board - the one component a storm actually kills. Then it’s honest repair math:
